• Financial Crisis - Europe's response

  The global economy is facing a financial crisis involving banking systems, stock markets and the flow of credit. Seeking common strategies to solve the difficulties, European institutions are coordinating national responses and making recommendations to improve the financial system.

• Energy and Climate change

  Climate change and energy are some of the biggest challenges facing mankind in the coming years. In March 2007, EU leaders agreed to cut CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020, (30% if global targets can be agreed on), and to set a binding 20% target for the use of renewable energy sources. The EU currently takes an active part in negotiations for a post-Kyoto climate regime.

• Budget Review

  Given the fundamental role of the budget for the EU to deliver its policy goals, bring about change and maximise the long-term impact of its action, the EU has decided in May 2006 to undertake a fundamental review of it to see how the budget could already be shaped to serve EU policies and to meet the challenges of the decades ahead.

• Lisbon Treaty

  European leaders signed the Treaty of Lisbon on 13 December 2007 in order to respond to existing political, economic and social changes with new rules. The main improvements brought about by the treaty will include: more efficient decision-making processes, more democracy through a greater role for the European Parliament and national parliaments and more coherence externally.

• European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009

  The modern world puts emphasis on better use of knowledge and rapid innovation. There is a need for skills and competences that enable people to embrace change as an opportunity and to be open to new ideas in a culturally diverse, knowledge-based society. Europe needs to boost its capacity for creativity and innovation to respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities of globalisation.

• The EU’s role in the world

  The EU is the world’s biggest trader and its currency, the euro, is the second one in international financial markets. It has a web of bilateral and multilateral agreements covering most countries and regions of the globe and spends a billion euros a month in assistance projects in all five continents. Its significant role on the global stage is indisputable.

• Lisbon strategy for Growth & Jobs

  In March 2000 EU leaders, gathered in Lisbon, decided to launch a new strategy with the aim of making Europe "the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world". Known as the Lisbon agenda, this strategy was relaunched in 2005, putting a stronger focus on growth and jobs.

• Migration

  One of the EU's political priorities is to devise and implement an effective, forward-looking and comprehensive European migration policy that benefits member states, citizens and migrants.

• Social reality stocktaking

  European societies are undergoing fundamental changes. Globalisation and demographic change are an opportunity but also a challenge for citizens and policy-makers. Family life, women’s position in society and the nature of work are changing and new types of inequality are emerging. All this needs a political response.
